At the heart of Bastard Countryside is the idea of two worlds, human and natural, colliding and giving rise to something new.
In Birch & Steel, a silver birch appears to have grown through an electricity pylon, so that the cables become extensions of its branches and the ceramic insulators its strange fruit. The straight lines of industry become entangled with nature’s chaotic growth.
