The political theorist, social reformer and revolutionary writer Tom Paine lived in Lewes for six years in the 18th Century. It was during his time in the town that he began to develop his ideas and wrote his first political work. He emigrated to the British American colonies in 1774 with the help of Benjamin Franklin, arriving just in time to participate in the American Revolution. I felt it important to include him in some way, so there is a little quote of his at the end of the book.
