My first book Bastard Countryside explored the British landscape through our confused relationship with nature. It asked the question, what might happen if we continue down the path of not looking after the environment. In many ways, I see Apiary as a prelude to the Bastard Countryside story with both posing dystopian questions. What happens to society when it breaks down? What happens when our freedoms disappear?
